NYPL launches a successful "DON'T CLOSE THE BOOK ON LIBRARIES" campaign in response to proposed City budget cuts. Library supporters take action, writing 130,000 letters, donating more than $144,000 online, calling elected officials, and raising their voices on the steps of City Hall. Mayor Bloomberg and the New York City Council restore $27 million, allowing all of the Library's research centers and neighborhood libraries to remain open, and preventing hundreds of layoffs. The campaign is later honored by the 2010 Nonprofit PR Awards for its advocacy campaign and lobbying.
